At first when many visitors to Artprize in Grand Rapids last fall viewed 2013 People’s Choice Grand Prize Winner “Sleeping Bear Dune Lakeshore” by Ann Loveless, they thought the 20-foot-long, four-panel beach panorama was a photograph or oil painting.

“They were amazed when I explained it was an art quilt,” shares the Frankfort resident, whose landscape textile talents — which are displayed at State of the Art Framing and Gallery in Beaulah — are inspired by the lakes and woods of Northwest Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. “This piece resonated with the Michigan public in that it was a favorite Michigan vacation spot.”

Breeze-blown dune grass, majestic birch trees and a sparkling Great Lake sunset depicted in the quilt were first captured in a photograph off which Loveless worked. The textile artisan, who has to her credit and continues to create through varying techniques an array of such scenic impressions, can also be commissioned to craft other special places from customers’ photos.

“Now that Artprize is behind me,” Loveless notes, “I’m working on a step-by-step book on my ‘Collage’ technique to be published this September.”

She also is scheduled to discuss, teach and display her art in a variety of prime cottage-area spots this spring, summer and fall. For details, visit quiltsbyann.com.
