Simplified lines, lower roof pitches,
tapered porch columns and exposed rafter tails characterize
this modern-ized, shingle-style Michigan cottage. But
what makes this ideal shoreline home so memorable is
its inventive stair tower.
Designed by Grand Rapids-based architect
Wayne Visbeen, AIA, IIDA of Visbeen Associates Inc.,
this key design feature lends lighthouse-inspired
curb appeal. Inside, its inclusion turns what would
otherwise be a two-story home into five: Halfway
between the first and second floor off of the U-shaped
stairway is one full room; another half-story above
the master suite on the second level is a “tower” room.
“Both rooms add interesting character
and offer great flexibility,” Visbeen noted. “The
first room makes a great playroom, library or home
office; the space above the master suite is ideal
for a telescope or reading room. And it gives you
a phenomenal view of the lake. ”
Two additional bedrooms, each equipped
with a walk-in closet, share access to the other
through a smaller room Visbeen envisions being a
fun “fort for kids.” The space could
also be a study or cozy spot to read.
On the main floor, an angled garage
leads into an ample back entry stocked with lockers,
benches and places to unload after a day at the lake.
A gracious kitchen opens to the living room and a “swing” space
(homework station or bar) leading into a family room. “That
could also be used as a master suite, guest room
or screened porch,” Visbeen said. “This
home is designed to afford homeowners endless living
options.”
